Scenic Tour Of the Kootenai River

Welcome to the Kootenai River Country
Just travel 3½ hours from Spokane or 4 hours from Missoula and step back in time to a small, friendly community with very little traffic and beautiful scenery. This annual 2 day bicycle tour offers cyclists optional routes and breathtaking scenery. This yearly event happens the second weekend in May and is sponsored by Kootenai Valley Partners Habitat for Humanity.

Imagine waking up on a Saturday morning and taking a bike ride along beautiful Northwest Montana Rivers. Your 98 mile ride begins in Libby, MT and heads west along the Kootenai River. Your route turns and follows the Yaak River, and leads you by the beautiful Yaak Falls. You will tour through a remote countryside with little one-room schoolhouses, and various wildlife can be observed. Gradually you will climb 4000 foot Pipe Creek Pass and then be rewarded with a scenic 25 mile descent back to Libby alongside roaring Pipe Creek. If this trip sounds a little too much for you there is a scenic 45 mile alternative for the Saturday ride. Your route begins with the 98-milers along the Kootenai. There will be plenty of time for you to stop and take a short walk to the Kootenai Falls where the movie, "The River Wild", was filmed. From there you'll ride along a meandering, blue-ribbon trout stream, then over a small farmland plateau. You'll then return to Libby along the Kootenai River. |

Sunday is here and another day of riding through the countryside. Today's adventure, is a 37-mile loop which follows the Kootenai River upstream to Lake Koocanusa and the Visitors' Center at the Libby Dam. You will all ride upriver on a private side-road where the majority of the traffic will be osprey, deer and squirrels. On your return trip you will travel down the opposite side of the river on Highway 37.
